About us
With about 20 scientific employees and students, the Institute for Combustion Technology of the University of Stuttgart conducts research on the fundamentals of modelling and simulation of turbulent, reacting flows in the areas of gas phase combustion, multiphase flows (gaseous/liquid and gaseous/solid) and nanoparticle processes. The teaching of ITV covers the fundamentals and advanced topics in combustion technology and simulation of reacting flow systems, as well as related programming basics.

31. German Flame Day for Sustainable Combustion
The Institute for Combustion Technology participated in the 31. German Flame Day for Sustainable Combustion, which was held at the TU Berlin. Six PhD students and employees presented the institute’s research of nanoparticle synthesis, hydrogen flames and combustion modelling in six presentations and three posters. Thorsten Zirwes receives the Jürgen-Warnatz-Award
Thorsten Zirwes, deputy director of the Institute for Combustion Technology (ITV), received the Jürgen-Warnatz-Award from the German Section of the Combustion Institute this September. The award is given biannually during the German Flame Day, which was held at the TU Berlin this year. The Jürgen-Warnatz-Award honors “outstanding young scientists in the field of combustion”. The picture shows Thorsten Zirwes together with Prof. Henning Bockhorn after the award ceremony on the Wannsee.
Fully-resolved simulations of volatile combustion and NOx formation from single coal particles in recycled flue gas environments

The interaction of coal particles and recycled/recirculated flue gas (RFG) with elevated temperatures and low levels of oxygen occurs in various pulverised coal combustion scenarios. In this work, the effect of oxygen level and temperature on single coal particle combustion characteristics and NOx formation in N2 diluent is studied by means of fully-resolved particle simulations. A comparative study of two-phase coupling models for a sparse-Lagrangian particle method

Simulations of spray combustion in statistically homogeneous turbulence with different droplet loadings are performed using a sparse-Lagrangian particle method called MMC. We compare different models for the distribution of the droplet source terms to the notional particles with corresponding CP-DNS data and solutions of a dense particle method that employs standard models for the two-phase coupling. Modeling of Sub-Grid Conditional Mixing Statistics in Turbulent Sprays Using Machine Learning Methods

Deep artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for the modeling of the sub-grid scale mixing quantities such as the filtered density function (FDF) of mixture fraction and the conditional scalar dissipation rate. A deep ANN with four hidden layers is trained with carrier-phase direct numerical simulations (CP-DNS) of turbulent spray combustion. [see more]
Carrier-phase DNS of detailed NOx formation in early-stage pulverized coal combustion with fuel-bound nitrogen

Carrier-phase direct numerical simulation of detailed NOx formation in pulverized coal flames (PCC) with fuel-bound nitrogen is conducted in a 3D temporally evolving mixing layer setup where Lagrangian particles (Colombian bituminous coal) in an air stream (upper half of the domain) mix with the products of lean volatile/ air combustion in the lower stream. Sparse-Lagrangian PDF Modelling of Silica Synthesis from Silane Jets in Vitiated Co-flows with Varying Inflow Conditions

This paper presents a comparison of experimental and numerical results for a series of turbulent reacting jets where silica nanoparticles are formed and grow due to surface growth and agglomeration. We use large-eddy simulation coupled with a multiple mapping conditioning approach for the solution of the transport equation for the joint probability density function of scalar composition and particulate size distribution. Mixing Time Scale Models for Multiple Mapping Conditioning with Two Reference Variables

A novel multiple mapping conditioning (MMC) approach has been developed for the modelling of turbulent premixed flames including mixture inhomogeneities due to mixture stratification or mixing with the cold surroundings. MMC requires conditioning of a mixing operator on characteristic quantities (reference variables) to ensure localness of mixing in composition space. Previous MMC used the LES-filtered reaction progress variable as reference field. [see more]
